Harry Kane’s trophy hopes suffer another major blow as Bayern Munich team-mate Manuel Neuer makes an unwanted career first

Bayern Munich have been eliminated from the DFB Cup, marking the end of one of Harry Kane’s trophy hopes this season.

Goalkeeper Manuel Neuer summed up the evening: The German received his first red card in his career in the game against Bayer Leverkusen.

An injury sustained in last weekend’s draw with Borussia Dortmund meant Kane did not feature in Tuesday night’s game and his absence was felt as last season’s Bundesliga winners reached the round of 16 thanks to a goal from the former striker Nathan Tella won 1-0 from Southampton in the second half.

Bayern striker Kane has yet to win a major trophy, although he has won two European Championship finals with England, a Champions League final with Tottenham and the Golden Boot ten times in his career.

To secure silverware this season, he now has to rely on winning the Bundesliga or Champions League.

After Neuer was sent off in the 17th minute, Bayern fell behind early on.

He stormed out of his box and took out the advancing Jeremie Frimpong.

The Leverkusen star remained lying on the deck while Neuer stayed on his feet and tried to get the ball.

The 38-year-old was then shown a straight red.

As he left the pitch he was seen apologizing to coach Vincent Kompany.

Daniel Peretz replaced him on his Bayern debut.

It is the first red card Neuer has received in his senior career.

This means the German has completed an incredible run of 866 appearances without being sent off early.

During his career he received a yellow card 23 times.

However, none of these bookings occurred during the game for Germany.

Neuer has represented his country 124 times and has never been cautioned.

The referee of the DFB Cup game, Harm Osmers, handed out three yellow cards in the first 22 minutes in addition to Neuer’s red card.

Two more warnings were handed out in a heated duel between the competition’s 20-time winners and the current defending champions.

However, Bayern are currently at the top of the Bundesliga.

Leverkusen are in third place, seven points ahead of Kompany’s side and three ahead of second-placed Eintracht Frankfurt.

In Kane’s debut season with Bayern last season, they finished third, a whopping 18 points ahead of Leverkusen.

They were also eliminated from the cup competitions.
