Have the Detroit Lions considered pursuing Daniel Jones?

Allen Park — When the New York Giants released Daniel Jones on Friday and subsequent reports suggested he preferred to sign with a contender, some floated the idea that the Detroit Lions should bring him in to replace Jared Goff.

“We haven’t really talked about that yet,” head coach Dan Campbell said Tuesday. “The name came up, but it’s not like we sat down and talked. So I don’t want to give you a yes or no.”

Jones requested his release, the Giants said in an announcement. He cleared waivers on Monday and is free to sign with any team. Organizations that NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport viewed as potential options included the San Francisco 49ers, Baltimore Ravens and Las Vegas Raiders, and he mentioned that “there will be others.”

FOX Sports’ Jordan Schultz reported Sunday that he “expects” the Lions, Ravens, 49ers, Minnesota Vikings and Miami Dolphins to pursue him.

The Lions have two quarterbacks on the active roster (Goff and Hendon Hooker) and another on the practice squad, Jake Fromm.

Jones has appeared in 70 career appearances (69 starts), completing 64.1% of his passes for 14,582 yards, 70 touchdowns and 47 interceptions. He had a problem with fumbling early in his career – 29 times in his first two seasons – but he appeared to solve that problem by putting the ball on the ground 21 times from 2021 to 2024.

The Giants posted a 24-44-1 record in games started by Jones. Her best season with him was in 2022, when the quarterback led New York to a playoff victory over the Minnesota Vikings.
