Heat’s Dru Smith is out with a left lower leg injury

heat guard Dru Smith suffered a left lower leg injury during Monday’s contest against Brooklyn and was out for the remainder of the contest, the team announced (via Twitter).

While the severity of the injury hasn’t been officially announced, it didn’t look good in real time, according to some local reporters (Twitter links via Ira Winderman of The South Florida Sun Sentinel and Anthony Chiang of The Miami Herald). .

Smith went straight back to the locker room after the injury, along with his wife, Winderman and Chiang said. For what it’s worth, several fans who responded in the comments seem to think Smith may have suffered a Achilles tendon injury.

As Chiang notes (via Twitter), the third-year guard is on a two-way contract and appeared to be the leading candidate to be promoted to a standard contract, with the Heat having to fill their 14th standard spot by the Dec. 29 trade Thomas Bryant. A serious injury would be devastating for both sides, but especially for Smith, who missed most of last season with a torn ACL.

Smith, who turns 27 next week, has been a staple for Miami of late, thanks in part to his impressive defense. Over the last eight games, he averaged 9.3 points, 2.8 rebounds, 2.1 assists and 2.3 steals in 26.1 minutes, with a shooting line of .532/.560/.769.
