Heavy lake snow in motion; Where another foot plus will fall

SYRACUSE, NY – Areas of north and northeast Onondaga County were inundated with snow last night. There will be much more, not just for them, but for other parts of central New York southeast of Lake Ontario. The dangerous narrow band of snow in places will shift over the next 12 hours as the wind shifts from westerly to northwesterly.

Doppler radar snowfall estimates show over 12 inches of snow fell across Eastern Oswego and Northern Onedia counties Thursday afternoon through this morning. Check out this photo from the Rome/Delta Lake area of Jim Grogan of the rock band Maybe Sunday. This is a winter wonderland where the thick and heavy snow almost buries the mailbox.

As of Friday morning, lake effect snow warnings are in effect east and southeast of Lake Ontario, including the Syracuse area, with some advisories further west. This weather warning is in effect for a long time and will remain in effect until late in the day on Sunday. Here is a map showing the alerted counties by county.

There will be additional heavy snow in southern Oswego and western Oneida County on Friday between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Some locations will experience an inch or two per hour with new snow totals exceeding 10 inches during this time. Note that the city of Syracuse and southern and southwestern points are nearly snow-free today. This is the nature of localized lake effect snow bands.

As the weekend progresses, there will be a movement of the snow band and thus heavy snow accumulations. By this evening, winds will move a weaker band into the Syracuse and Onondaga County area. This band will strengthen later tonight as winds become more favorable and temperatures become even colder, allowing heavy snow to fall in these areas. Here is the forecast for the weekend.

FRIDAY: Lake effect snow continues in roughly the same locations, particularly over portions of Oswego, northern Oneida and southwest Lewis counties. Expect up to 30 cm or more of snow within the heaviest lake effect snow bands. Outside of the bands of lake effect snow, you can expect some severe weather and a mix of sunshine and cloud cover. It’s getting colder and windier. Highs near 32, then falling late in the day. Wind: W 10-20 with gusts to 30 MPH. Wind chills will be in the single digits early, then mostly in the teens, but briefly in the low 20s.

FRIDAY NIGHT: This band of lake effect snow will shift southward and move through the immediate CNY area and then redevelop southeast of Lake Ontario across a good portion of our area throughout the night. Expect up to 6 or more inches of snow in the immediate CNY area during this period. It will be windy and cold late tonight with wind chills in the single digits. Low near 22. Wind: W to WNW 10-20 gusting to MPH.

SATURDAY: Snow will continue southeast of Lake Ontario in CNY, possibly moving slightly north. An additional 6 or more inches of snow is likely within the lake’s snow bands during this period. Outside of the lake effect, expect bands of snow with clouds and intermittent sunshine with a passing thunderstorm or a brief snow shower. It will continue to be windy and cold in the morning with single digit wind chills. High in the upper 20s. Wind: W 10-20 with gusts to 35 MPH.

SATURDAY EVENING: Lake effect snow intensifies. There is some uncertainty about exactly where the snow bands will be located. However, at this point, my forecast is for the heaviest snow to be roughly near the Route 31, Route 49 and Route 69 corridors, where another 6 to 12 inches of snow or more is likely. Some snow accumulation is possible on the Thruway and Route 5 corridors. Outside the lake effect snow bands, some severe weather and changing clouds are expected. More wind and seasonal cold, wind chills could drop below zero in places. Low around 21.

SUNDAY: Lake effect snow near the Route 31 and Thruway corridors will weaken in the morning and drift southwest through midday. Another 3 to 6 inches of snow is possible before it gets lighter. Outside of the lake effect, expect bands of snow with clouds and intermittent sunshine with a passing thunderstorm or a brief snow shower. In the morning the wind cools below 0°C in places. Cold, the wind decreases in the afternoon and evening. High in the upper 20s.

MONDAY: Partly sunny skies, continued cold but calmer winds. Only a few light thunderstorms, mainly west and south of Syracuse, with no snow accumulation. More sunshine to the north and northeast of Onondaga County, while skies to the south and southwest will be mostly cloudy. High: 23.
