Heavy security planned for Orange Bowl pep rally, game amid attack in New Orleans

MIAMI BEACH – South Florida law enforcement is preparing for next week’s Orange Bowl as 14 people were killed when a pickup truck rammed into a crowd in New Orleans.

On Wednesday, the Orange Bowl will draw more than 72,000 people to the game at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens and the pep rally beforehand in Miami Beach.

With permanent barriers, Lincoln Road is one of the most popular meeting places in South Florida. The Capital One Orange Bowl Pep Rally is Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.

Police met Thursday to discuss their response plan in light of the tragedy.

“During this pep rally, you will see a strong police force, not only within the perimeter, but there will also be an outside perimeter to ensure that no one can actually get through the barriers,” Miami Beach Police spokesman Christopher Bess said.

Police did not provide further details, but told CBS News Miami that they did not plan to set up barricades to close Ocean Drive to cars. They will deploy more police officers in uniform and undercover, monitor about 1,000 surveillance cameras and deploy technology.

“We have about twelve drone operators who are available if needed. We will have SWAT personnel and other tactical units to ensure all resources are activated,” Bess said.

Police said there were no credible threats.

“Our intelligence analysts and detectives are conducting social media searches. They have been working diligently assessing social media as we speak,” Bess said.

The attack in New Orleans weighs on some visitors to South Beach.

“What’s happening is shocking,” Martha Lukasik said as she led her family through South Beach.

As Serena Johnson and Ruth Monique strolled along Lincoln Road, they kept their eyes peeled and enjoyed their visit.

“I will continue to be careful. “I will continue to be mindful of my surroundings, but I will still enjoy and live my life because tomorrow is not a promise,” said Serena Johnson.

Monique’s plan is to enjoy the moment.

“I am very aware. I have a feeling of peace, but it won’t stop me from living my life,” Monique said.
