Iowa State vs. Miami series history, Pop-Tarts Bowl results

This will be the first duel between the two schools. Both played in that bowl game, but only when the game was under a different name.

Since its inception in 1990, the Pop-Tarts Bowl has had several names, including the Cheez-It Bowl and the Camping World Bowl, both played by Iowa State under Matt Campbell. The Hurricanes have played in this game six times and most recently lost to Oklahoma State 37-34 in the 2020 Cheez-It Bowl.

Iowa State is traveling to this bowl game for the third time. The Cyclones are 0-2, losing 33-9 in the 2019 Camping World Bowl and 20-13 in the 2021 Cheez-It Bowl.

Expect a lot of points when Miami takes the field.

The Hurricanes’ offense is the best scorer in the country with 44.2 points per game. Their defense allows 23.9 points per game, which is close to the national average.

Heisman finalist Cam Ward is the team’s starting quarterback. Ward finished the regular season with 4,123 passing yards and a national-leading 36 passing touchdowns. His favorite target, Xavier Restrepo, has 69 catches, 1,127 yards and 11 touchdowns. Both Ward and Restrepo earned All-America honors this season.

Miami seemed destined for the College Football Playoff for most of the season, starting 9-0 and finishing at No. 4 in the AP poll. But the team lost two of its last three games to drop out of contention .

If Miami has struggled this year, it has been largely due to its defense. The Hurricanes have allowed teams to score 45 (Louisville), 42 (Syracuse), 38 (California) and 34 (Virginia Tech). Of Miami’s last eight opponents, only two failed to score 28 or more points.

Pop-Tarts Bowl Opt-Outs: Is Cam Ward Playing?

Teams often take a cautious approach to absences and injuries, making it impossible to know for sure who will play and who won’t until the game begins. But right now, it looks like Miami’s Cam Ward and Iowa State’s star offensive talent will be taking part in the game.

Ward told ESPN earlier this month that he planned to play in the Pop-Tarts Bowl.
