Here’s what Moana 2’s end credits scene could mean for the future

The effort to connect the people of Oceania Moana 2 is just the beginning of the adventures for Moana (Auli’i Cravalho) and her friends. Along with Maui and the rest of the crew on her latest cinematic journey, Moana has discovered that her path is hardly mapped out and is filled with enemies more powerful than they can imagine. And they’re going to need all the help they can get.

After the curse is broken, things will shine Moana 2– a curse that separated not only people, but also the god-like legendary figures who were bound to the elements. It makes sense why Matangi (Awhimai Fraser), the mischievous bat goddess, decided to bank on Moana’s success: it freed her. And we can also guess from the film’s post-credits scene that this also freed the film’s storm god Nalo (Tofiga Fepulea’i), who almost killed Moana and briefly turned Maui human.

No longer bound to heaven, Nalo is none too happy with Matangi and chains her up again as punishment to see where her loyalties really lie. We have to admit that we love Matangi turning around and delving deeper as an antihero. Nalo claims to continue thwarting Moana, who defeated him and might have gained some demigod powers, as humanity’s reunification poses a threat to the discord he and the other gods seek to sow.

So he starts recruiting more villains – including Matangi, and yes, we get the return of our favorite shiny crab god Tamatoa (Jemaine Clement), ready to team up for a League of Evil and a theme song.

This means that Moana could one day return to take on the forces of darkness in a future film or another Disney project – and she won’t be alone. Now with Maui, her crew, other hiking friends and the Kakamora warriors, she’s off to a good start. And hopefully a Hulk too – er, Tefiti (messed up my green superheroes) who should wake up from her nap to help, and maybe grumpy enough to bring out her volcano of Te-Kā to play.

Moana 2 is now in the cinema. Regard Moana on Disney+.
