Hideki Matsuyama sets a new 54-hole tournament record at The Sentry in Hawaii

Japan’s Hideki Matsuyama set a new 54-hole tournament record in the PGA Tour’s season-opening event in Hawaii at The Sentry.

The overnight leader shot a 62 to move to 27 under par – but still leads by just one shot after Collin Morikawa also managed a round of 62.

Both players were just one stroke shy of tying the course record, on a day where virtually no wind meant perfect conditions for low scores.

Matsuyama, the 2021 Masters champion, made 11 birdies, the most he has achieved in a single PGA Tour round.

The 32-year-old could have tied the course record with a long eagle putt on the 18th, but needed two putts for the final birdie of his round.

His co-major winner Morikawa took the lead on the first five holes with three birdies and an eagle.

But his lead didn’t last long as Matsuyama, who had only missed one shot in the first three rounds, caught up with him on the next hole.

“Collin played well and I just followed him, so good day,” Matsuyama said.

“It was a lot of fun, but I would like him to take it easy on Sunday.”

Morikawa, the 2020 US PGA champion and 2021 Open champion, believes he can overtake his rival.

“I will do my best tomorrow because my goal is to win,” said the American.

“When you play that well, everyone talks about being in the zone, but you really just focus on each shot.”

Belgium’s Thomas Detry is four shots further back at 22 under after a 64, a shot better overall than South Korea’s Sungjae Im, who also shot a 62, while England’s Harry Hall is fifth at 20 under after a third-round 66.
