Hilary Duff jokes she was “lied to” about expanding her family

While Hilary Duff She is now the mother of four children. Her biggest parenting obstacle was the birth of baby No. 3 three years ago.

“People lied to me and said once you get to three, it’s easy if you get past two to three,” Duff, 37, reveals exclusively in the latest issue of Us weekly. “Three sent me for a loop. I couldn’t touch my feet on the ground for a whole year.”

Duff and husband Matthew Koma tied the knot in December 2019. The actress was already the mother of her now 12-year-old son Luca, whom she shares with her ex-husband Mike Comrie. Duff and Koma, 37, welcomed their first child together, daughter Banks, in October 2018. In 2021 and 2024 they expanded their offspring again with daughters Mae and Townes.

As Duff has adjusted to being a mother of four, she now has the strength to be adaptable and not feel guilty when things aren’t perfect.

Hilary Duff is leaning on her husband Matthew Koma as the couple navigate their new life as a family of six. “The one great thing about Matt and I is that sometimes I think we don’t feel old enough to take on all these responsibilities. We’re both the same age. We are 37 and don’t know how (…)

“When I had four children, I realized that I couldn’t control everyone’s happiness and be the cruise director of everything all the time,” she shares. “I’m doing my best, but it was a really nice exercise to just say no a little bit more.”

Of course, this lesson came with practice. Duff says she assumed that with their third child they would “just do what the family does” and “just be.” However, that wasn’t the case with Mae. According to Duff, Mae likes to “run everything” and has a big “personality.”

“She’s a wild woman, but she has her own ideas,” Duff explains, but adds that she is “possessed” by her daughter’s spirit.

“And then obviously we liked them so much that we went with number four,” she jokes. “And it felt like there was room, and I’m not sure there is, but we’re figuring it out.”

While Duff has a strong support system by her side, she also uses tools like Meta AI to stay on top of things — especially during the holiday season.

“The burden on mothers is heavy. I wake up in the middle of the night and I’m like, “Oh, I have these things that I can’t handle and I’m just driving when you shouldn’t be using your phone.” And then of course everything spins. So I’m slowly but surely preparing and I’m definitely excited. I love the holiday season so much, but being an adult now and making it magical for so many people is just so much,” she says of her partnership with the brand. “So I used Meta-AI and it was incredible because it’s like a mind partner. It’s just something to throw off your thoughts, and it brings up ideas that maybe seem a little stale to me.”
