Historic Warriors’ shots weren’t enough to keep up with Luka Doncic, Mavericks – The Mercury News

SAN FRANCISCO – When the Mavericks led the Warriors 100-90 midway through the third quarter, it seemed like everything was on the table. The all-time record for points in a game, the single game record for 3 seconds, 60 points for Luka Doncic.

Some of the most extreme records remain, but the Warriors and Mavericks combined for 48 3-pointers – the most in a game ever. The Warriors tied their franchise record with 27 treys. Doncic dropped a season-high 45 points along with 13 assists and 11 rebounds, and Draymond Green (21 points) and Klay Thompson (29 points) also posted their season-highs.

The Warriors’ worst record? The most scored three points in a loss in league history.

The sliding Warriors and the onrushing Mavericks met at Chase Center, resulting in an explosion of scoring and a 143-133 victory for the Mavericks.

Defense hasn’t been a problem for the Warriors this year, even when down 8-2, but the Mavericks – who have won 12 of 14 – still tore them apart. The Warriors (14-11) cut a 19-point deficit to three in the second half, but never proved for any length of time that they could get enough defensive stops to beat the Mavericks. Even the best shooting night in franchise history wasn’t enough.

“The problem was Luka Doncic,” Warriors head coach Steve Kerr said after the game. “He was incredible. Give him credit, give Dallas credit. They have a great team – they made it to the final last year. They spread you around. They are just as difficult to protect as anyone else. And we tried a lot of different things.”

Twice in as many days, Kerr called Draymond Green the best defender in the world. Due to the Warriors’ constant search for the right combinations and the best ways to get the most out of Jonathan Kuminga, Kerr had the best defender in the world on the bench as the Mavericks started the game 9-9 from the field.

“They basically beat us in the first six minutes,” Curry said after the game.

The high-scoring Mavericks got what they wanted, both in the halfcourt and in transition. Doncic scored 15 points in his first six minutes. Buddy Hield and Lindy Waters III spent time staying in front of Kyrie Irving, a difficult task for even the league’s best fullbacks.

A corner from Quentin Grimes in the 3rd minute after a great skip pass from Doncic defined the quarter, with Dallas shooting 65.4% from the field and 61.5% from 3 balls. They scored 46 points in the frame – the most points scored by a Warriors opponent in this quarter ever this year.

Ironically, Green prevented a complete attack on offense. He made three three-pointers in the corner, starting a 12-3 run.

Doncic continued to create open looks for others while creating his own shot. In the first half alone he scored 28 points, nine assists and eight boards.

As phenomenal as Doncic was, the Warriors persevered. While Dallas doubled Steph Curry on every ball screen, he and Kevon Looney dismantled the Mavericks’ defense in the short roll. Hield drilled three three-pointers and Jonathan Kuminga took advantage of the game becoming a track and field meet.

After Hield’s third three-pointer in the second quarter, Mavs coach Jason Kidd called a timeout. Even though he turned off the lights, his team was only ahead by 10.

The Warriors played Doncic twice as hard as the Mavericks did Curry and forced him out of his hands. They still needed their best 3-point shooting performance of the year to hang on, and they did.

Green’s fourth three-pointer of the game gave Golden State 18 in the first half – a franchise record for any half. Green and Curry struck out four, with Andrew Wiggins and Hield each having three hits.

In the ridiculous offensive environment, the Warriors trailed 81-74 at halftime.

Despite the disastrous start to the game, Kerr decided to bring Green off the bench again at the start of the second half. Of course, Dallas surpassed the 100-point mark within five minutes. An insane step-back Doncic 3 against Wiggins boosted his stats to a 41-point triple-double.

At the end of the third quarter, the Warriors finally made a series of stops for a 9-0 run, which Kuminga highlighted with a breakaway jam. The Warriors targeted Spencer Dinwiddie in isolation and Lindy Waters III picked him off on defense.
