Hollywood Begins Production After LA Fires: Jimmy Kimmel, NCIS, More

Production resumes in Los Angeles after being paused last week due to the wildfires that devastated the area.

CBS shows “NCIS,” “NCIS: Origins,” “Poppa’s House” and “The Neighborhood” are scheduled to resume filming on Monday. All four shows will be filmed on enclosed sound stages and monitored by health and safety experts throughout the day, according to a person familiar with the situation. Any cast or crew members affected by the fires or unable to make it to set safely will continue to receive their regular pay.

Likewise, ABC’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live” is set to begin filming again this week after going dark due to the fires. However, production on the CBS late-night series “After Midnight” will continue to be paused on Monday and Tuesday.

It remains to be seen how many other shows that closed last week will resume filming in the coming days. Affected productions included shows such as NBCUniversal’s “Hacks,” “Suits: LA,” “Ted” and “Loot,” as well as the second season of Amazon’s “Fallout.”

This is the latest blow to physical production in LA. The Corona lockdowns, writer and actor strikes and the collapse of the streaming bubble have led to a decline in the total number of productions in recent years.

A large number of fires have broken out in the Los Angeles area since last week, as extremely dry conditions coupled with strong Santa Ana winds allowed the fires to spread quickly and forced the evacuation of tens of thousands of residents. The Palisades Fire has burned over 23,000 acres as of this writing, while the Eaton Fire has burned over 14,000 acres. More strong winds are expected to hit Los Angeles and Ventura counties later this week, potentially leading to new outbreaks while complicating firefighters’ efforts to combat the current situation.
