Home Alone star reveals spooky encounter with real spider on set

Stern recalls that he wasn’t afraid to have a real tarantula fly across his face in several shots. “I said, ‘Okay, do it,'” he said. “So They put the spider on me and I let it crawl on my face for about five minutesjust so we both get used to each other. And then we just rolled the camera.

While Stern wasn’t injured in his spider encounter, his co-star Macaulay Culkin wasn’t quite as lucky. Stern recalled that Pesci immediately quit his role when he realized he had accidentally injured his young co-star. “He bit it – like, ‘Oh shit, I didn’t mean to do that,'” Stern recalled. “Joe was like, ‘Oh, I’m sorry I did that.’ But (that’s the) only time you could see Pesci (character) breaking.” The 1990 holiday classic features a long segment in which Stern and Pesci’s “Wet Bandits” are tortured by Kevin McCallister’s homemade traps, so Culkin may have been the last laugh after the minor injury.

Culkin confirmed during a recent question-and-answer session with fans that Pesci temporarily lost control because he was trying to “scare” the child actor. “He said, ‘I want to threaten this kid… (and now) I have a scar,” Culkin added. “I saw (Pesci’s) face — and I’ve never seen Joe Pesci really scared.” Because he’s like, ‘I just bit a kid!'” He previously told Conan O’Brien that Pesci’s bite broke the skin on his finger, which made the young actor “really angry” at his co-star. “That was me, ‘I don’t care how many Oscars you have or whatever, biting a nine-year-old, what the hell is wrong with you?'” he recalled.
