Right-wing pundits and homophobes are apparently surprised to hear this hit musical Evil is strange.

The film adaptation of the hit Wizard of Oz Spin-off, about the development of an unusual friendship between two witches, broke box office records with the premiere of a Broadway film adaptation.

But some commentators have accused the famous camp musical of being “woke.”

The X/Twitter account End Wokeness shared a clip of co-stars Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo discussing the weirdness of the land of Oz, saying it’s “so gay, even the animals in Oz are gay.” .

Homophobes and right-wing pundits labeled the musical “woke” and strangely used the old catchphrase “woke, go broke” – somehow missing the fact that it grossed almost $165m (£131m) worldwide in its opening weekend.

One user, venting frustration that the co-stars were implying that everything in the Land of Oz “has always been a strange place,” asked, “Since when?”

The original 1939 film starring gay icon Judy Garland is so integrated into queer society that it was referenced in a code phrase used primarily by gay men before homosexuality became legal to identify their identity: Friends of Dorothy.

Queerness is such an integral part of The Wizard of Oz, that Kenya Barris, who will direct a remake, assured fans that it would be unapologetically LGBTQ+.

“The original was an allegory and a reflection of the world at the time, with things like the Great Depression and the Dust Bowl,” the author said Black said the director in 2022. “We will turn the mirror on our current situation and take diverse characters from the LGBTQ+ community, from different cultural communities and socio-economic communities and tell a story that reflects the world.”
