Honolulu Marathon a community through shared suffering

HONOLULU (KHON2) – One of the best races in the world, the Honolulu Marathon, returns this weekend on Sunday, December 8th, covering 26.2 miles in paradise. The event is expected to be one of the largest in history, with 30,000 expected attendees.

“The weather was nice, let’s hope it stays that way. We’ll have over 30,000 people on the start line on Sunday, so it’s going to be a big event. “It is the largest Honolulu Marathon ever when we combine it with the Start to Park 10K, which begins directly with the marathon,” said Jim Barahal, CEO of the Honolulu Marathon.

Registration is still possible.

“If you’re still thinking about it, start training today!” Barahal joked. “Yes, we have late registration at the convention center starting tomorrow and you can still register for the marathon. If you haven’t trained yet you might want to think about the Start to Park 10K, you can still take part in that.”

52nd Honolulu Marathon expects more than 35,000 participants

The course is the same as before and includes some hills but great volunteers and a community feel.

“We’re running a 26.2-mile marathon on a relatively small island, so you go downtown, detour past Ala Moana, go through Waikiki, up Diamond Head and around and all the way to Hawaii Kai and back,” Barahal said. “The thing about the marathon, and I think what makes big marathons so great, is the camaraderie and community that forms out there. The participants of the race form their own community of people who you do not know and with whom you will never communicate again if you take part in the race. There’s something special about being out there together, and everyone suffers in their own way. It’s a great community coming together, all of our volunteers and aid stations, the signs, the music, all coming together to get people to the finish line.”
