What is carbon monoxide poisoning?

Carbon monoxide poisoning occurs when someone breathes in too much carbon monoxide (CO), a deadly gas that cannot be seen, smelled or tasted. The cause of this is often defective devices such as ovens or gas stoves or the operation of engines in closed rooms.

Even small amounts of CO can cause dizziness, nausea or confusion, while high amounts can quickly lead to unconsciousness or death. Because it is impossible to detect without a CO detector, it is called the “silent killer.”
