How do you cover Cincy’s top 2 receivers?

Given that the Bengals have one of the best wide receiver combinations in the NFL, how would you try to stop them? Should the Cowboys have their No. 1 cornerback (Trevon Diggs) cover the Bengals’ No. 2 wide receiver (Tee Higgins) and then double-team their No. 1 (Ja’Marr Chase)? Or do you do your best against the best and try to eliminate everyone else? – Ronald Franklin/Shreveport, LA

Nick: Great question. I think if you really want to create variety and give the Bengals something difficult to plan for, then you do it all. Everything you just said and more. I don’t think anyone in the NFL can easily cover Chase 1-on-1 on every play. Reporting on Higgins is also a challenge. But I think if the Cowboys can improve Burrow and the offense, it will go a long way. Travel Trevon Diggs with Chase for a series. Maybe move Bland there too. A double-team chase at times, and then maybe passing a safety to Higgins every now and then. It’s like facing a great pass rusher. Sometimes you double it and triple it, but there are times when it’s a 1v1 duel. You just can’t do the same thing over and over again. I think Mike Zimmer will have a good plan for that. But if there’s ever a time to have Diggs and Bland out there together, it’s for this game.

Tommy: The first step to success against Chase and Higgins is not giving the player throwing the ball enough time to throw it to them. Dallas needs to beat Joe Burrow in this game if they want to be successful on defense overall. From a coverage perspective, tarring Chase seems to make the most sense to me given how dangerous he is downfield. However, Dallas needs to be disciplined in the midfield because Joe Burrow is one of the best in the league at hitting break-in routes, something CJ Stroud and the Texans have also done well. If you have both Trevon Diggs and DaRon Bland in this game, I think either one could go up against Chase and Higgins with some help from a safety, but watch out for Jourdan Lewis potentially being in the right spot to to make a play in his nickel spot as the Bengals continue to try to work the middle of the field.
