How Metaphor ReFantazio got Atlus out of its persona rut

Atlus consistently makes great games. Both Persona 4 and Persona 5 are all-timers, but it’s true that they’re all a bit… the same. Each game has the same familiar setting, a Japanese high school, and the same character archetypes. There’s the clumsy guy, the reserved, smart girl, the sporty girl, and so on. Metaphor: ReFantazio made the critical improvement Atlus needed – it pulled the studio out of that rut.

When I got Metaphor at launch, it took me a few weeks to get comfortable with it. Fantasy settings aren’t usually my thing, but in Metaphor it’s done so well that it reminds me of one of my favorite JRPGs of all time – Final Fantasy 6.
