How Moana 2’s post-credits scene sets up Moana 3 and a familiar face returns

What adventures lie next for the team of Auli’i Cravalho and Dwayne Johnson? Moana 3? The post-credits scene in Moana 2 provides some pointers.

In the new sequel, Moana (Cravalho) and the demigod Maui (Johnson) reunite to fight the cursed island of Motufetū – which can help people from all of the region’s islands find each other via their boats – from the depths of the ocean island to bring back the wishes of the storm god Nalo (Tofiga Fepuela’i).

Along the way, they meet a new magical, mysterious figure named Matangi (voiced by Awhimai Fraser), who at some point holds Maui captive and is tasked with preventing anyone from reaching Motufetū.

However, she ultimately guides Moana on her path and helps them find the cursed island, as seen in the musical number “Get Lost”, hoping to secure her own freedom from the villainous god.

After Moana, Maui and her new crew (shipbuilding expert Loto (Rose Matafeo), history expert Moni (Hualā Chung), and farmer Kele (David Fane)) find the lost island against Nalo’s wishes and begin to reunite the Polynesian people from all the islands in one post -Credits scene shows Matangi talking to Nalo himself.

In the post-credits scene, Nalo expresses that he himself will attempt to punish Moana and Maui for their attempts to defy his wishes and reconnect the people of the oceans.

He and Matangi are joined by the giant coconut crab Tamatoa (voiced again by Jermaine Clement), who audiences will remember as a villain with an outstanding singing voice from the original film.

Tamatoa still wants revenge on Moana and Maui after they stole Maui’s fishing hook in the 2016 original, and he even offers to sing a new song for the other antagonists along the way.

However, Disney has not yet confirmed a third one Moana In the film, the series seems primed to star Nalo as he continues his attempts to stop Moana from staying in touch with her spiritual ancestors and guides of the past.

With Matangi and Tamatoa still at Nalo’s side, both main antagonists appear poised to return to the big screen should Moana set sail again later.

In the meantime, a live-action reinterpretation of the first part Moana Adventure (starring Johnson as Maui) is in the works and is scheduled to hit theaters in July 2026.
