DETROIT – Metro Detroit is expected to see some snow in the next 24 hours, but how much snow can we expect and when will it be heaviest?

Wednesday morning

Light snow fell in the Thumb region Wednesday morning, mostly north of I-69.

These snow showers could produce anything from a layer of dust to a half-inch accumulation.

It was a windy start with temperatures that felt below freezing.

Wednesday afternoon

On Wednesday it will be mostly cloudy during the day. Temperatures will be in the low to mid 30s C as winds increase.

The daylight hours will be relatively dry and there will only be a few snowflakes flying.

Wednesday evening

An arctic front will move through the region on Wednesday night, bringing short, heavy snow showers.

The heaviest snowfall is expected between 8 and 11 p.m

Some of the snow showers will drop rapid accumulations and significantly reduce visibility for motorists.

These “snow squalls” can cause whiteout conditions very suddenly. Therefore, be careful on the roads on Wednesday evening.

Overnight and into Thursday, west/northwest winds will be 35-45 mph and wind chills will drop into the single digits by morning.

Snow depth until Thursday morning

Snow amounts of 1 to 2 inches are possible through Thursday morning. Accumulation will be even lower along the state border, but higher in the Thumb.

Repeated snow squalls may bring depths of more than 5 cm in isolated areas.

Depending on how much road crews are able to clear overnight, there will likely be slippery areas during the Thursday morning commute, particularly on side roads and elevated areas.

Here, Ashlee breaks down the forecast and schedule:

Rest of the week

It will become drier later Thursday and temperatures will turn frigid Friday morning, with lows in the teens and wind chills in the single digits.

But temperatures will rise into the 40s by Sunday and early next week, with a chance of rain again on Monday.
