How the Lions can secure the NFC North title as the conference’s No. 1 seed in Week 17

How the Lions can secure the NFC North title as the conference’s No. 1 seed in Week 17

The Detroit Lions punched their ticket to the postseason weeks ago, but now have their sights set on clinching the NFC North and the conference’s No. 1 seed, two things they can accomplish this week.

The Lions enter Week 17 atop the NFC North and the conference, but are tied with the Minnesota Vikings at 13-2 and the Philadelphia Eagles are 12-3 in the hunt for the No. 1 seed.

The Lions currently have a lead over the Vikings due to their win over Minnesota earlier in the season. The two teams will meet again in Week 18, but there is a chance the game will be meaningless for Detroit.

How the Lions can claim the No. 1 seed in the NFC North

If the Vikings lose to the Green Bay Packers and the Lions beat the San Francisco 49ers, Detroit would officially be NFC North champions and the No. 1 seed, giving the Lions home-field advantage in the playoffs.

However, if the Vikings are able to beat the Packers this week, the Week 18 matchup between Detroit and Minnesota will be exciting for everyone involved, regardless of the outcome of Monday night’s showdown between Detroit and the 49ers.

The Eagles are still in the hunt for the No. 1 pick, but they will need help. Philly has to win and the Lions and Vikings have to lose in Week 17 AND the Vikings have to beat the Lions in Week 18 for the Eagles to get a bye.

Philly’s bid to secure the No. 1 seed over the past two weeks suffered a setback after starting quarterback Jalen Hurts was ruled out for Week 17 due to a concussion, which will force the unreliable Kenny Pickett to start.

At the end of the season the Eagles face the Dallas Cowboys and the New York Giants. They haven’t locked up the NFC East yet and can shake up the division with a loss combined with a Washington Commanders win.

Philadelphia hosts Dallas at 1:00 p.m. ET, while the Vikings and Packers meet at 4:25 p.m. ET. The Lions and 49ers close out the week on Monday night, with kickoff scheduled for 8:15 p.m. ET.
