How to watch the Golden Globes 2025: date, time, streaming

It’s January, almost all of the presumed Best Picture Oscar contenders are widely known, and yet none of them have risen to the top, like Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” did last year. Could the Golden Globes, taking place on Sunday, January 5th on CBS, provide some clarity?

There’s “Anora,” Sean Baker’s Cinderella story; “The Brutalist,” Brady Corbet’s postwar immigrant epic; “Conclave,” Edward Berger’s acclaimed drama about spiteful cardinals; and finally Jacques Audiard’s narco-musical “Emilia Pérez,” which leads the Golden Globes with a total of 10 nominations.

Here’s how to watch the Globes – and what to look out for.

The ceremony begins at 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time and 5:00 p.m. Pacific Time at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California. CBS is the official television network.

You can watch the show live online via the CBS app. To register, however, you will need your cable provider’s access data. The show is also streaming on Paramount+, although only subscribers with the Paramount+ premium plan with Showtime can watch live. For those who don’t, the ceremony will be available to stream on Paramount+ starting Monday.

Good news: Paramount+ offers seven-day free trials for new subscribers. Remember to cancel your subscription before the end of the week to avoid costs.

A number of live TV streaming services also offer access to CBS, including Hulu + Live TV, YouTube TV and FuboTV, all of which require subscriptions, although many offer free trials.

Variety and Entertainment Tonight will stream the red carpet arrivals beginning at 6:30 p.m. Eastern Time and 3:30 p.m. Pacific Time on their websites and social media platforms as part of the official Globes preshow. You can also watch it on the Golden Globes website. (Penske Media Corp. owns both the Golden Globes and Variety, among other brands.)

Comedian and actress Nikki Glaser will be the ceremony’s first solo female host. It’s almost certain that it’s going better than last year, when comedian Jo Koy was hired to host the evening just 10 days before the event and bombed.

Actors, comedians and musicians who will present awards include Nicolas Cage, Colman Domingo, Andrew Garfield, Demi Moore, Anya Taylor-Joy, Brandi Carlile, Elton John and Nate Bargatze.

After the Hollywood Foreign Press Association was dissolved following multiple scandals, an expanded group of more than 300 entertainment journalists from 85 countries is now responsible for selecting nominees and winners. The electoral body is not only significantly larger than the approximately 80-member, predominantly white HFPA, it is also more diverse.

The two lifetime achievement awards, the Cecil B. DeMille and Carol Burnett Awards, which recognize contributions to entertainment and television, will not be presented live at the main ceremony. The honorees, actors Viola Davis and Ted Danson, will be honored at a separate gala dinner Friday evening, with pre-recorded highlights shown on the Globes telecast.

“Emilia Pérez” is the top film with ten nominations, followed by “The Brutalist” (seven), “Conclave” (six) and “Anora” (five).

On the TV side, the third season of FX’s restaurant dramedy “The Bear” is ahead with five nominations. That’s followed by Hulu mystery comedy “Only Murders in the Building” and FX’s “Shogun,” which each received four nominations.

If you’re just here for the outfits, good news: Fashion-forward stars like Colman Domingo (“Sing Sing”), Timothée Chalamet (“A Complete Unknown”), Angelina Jolie (“Maria”), Zendaya (“Challengers”) ) and “Wicked” co-stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande are likely to be in attendance.

Karla Sofía Gascón, a star of “Emilia Pérez,” could become the first transgender actress to win a Globe for a film performance. (She would be the second transgender actress winner after Michaela Jaé Rodriguez, who took home an award in 2022 for the TV drama “Pose.”)

One dark horse to look out for is “The Substance,” the body horror film nominated in five categories including Best Musical or Best Comedy (don’t ask us to explain that categorization) .

Among the television nominees, look for “Shogun,” which cleans up the drama categories. Strong performances are also expected for the Max comedy “Hacks” and its star Jean Smart, as well as for Richard Gadd’s Netflix stalker drama “Baby Reindeer”.

Considering that the Globes hand out two top awards to films each year — best drama and best musical or comedy — you might think they overlap a lot more often than they do.

But the Globes winner in both categories has won best picture at the Oscars just four times in the last decade.

The Globes statuettes are surprisingly heavy: Each one weighs 7.8 pounds. (For comparison, a gallon of milk weighs 8.6 pounds.)
