How Yellowstone Killed Jamie Dutton

Note: This story contains spoilers from “Yellowstone” Season 5, Episode 14.

It was almost inevitable that Jamie Dutton would die in Yellowstone’s fifth season finale, and thankfully the show’s most hated character got what he deserved.

Jamie (Wes Bentley) spent the entire second half of season five struggling with the fact that he was partially responsible for the death of his father John (Kevin Costner). When his girlfriend and murder accomplice Sarah Atwood (Dawn Olivieri) had just gotten her desserts, even Jamie seemed worried that his time was up.

How did Jamie finally die?

After John was laid to rest at the ranch by family and ranch hands, Beth (Kelley Reily) wasted no time in sprinting out in her car to confront Jamie – ironically right after he gave a rousing speech about his father’s legacy and his Intentions had kept said ideals for the benefit of Montana.

Shortly after Jamie got home, Beth showed up to attack him. The two fight their way through Jamie’s living room and the brother is thrown a club in the face before pushing Beth away. He stumbled into the kitchen, grabbed one of his many cartons of milk from the fridge, and dumped it on himself to counteract the impact of the club. While he was doing this, Beth composed herself and came into the kitchen to punch him in the face.

Jamie took Beth down again and began to gloat that he was going to call the police and Beth would spend the rest of her life in prison for attempted murder while he turned the ranch land into the most impressive resort she had never seen see. Beth used this as her queue to tell her brother that she had sold the ranch. Jamie refused to believe that anyone could afford it until she revealed that she had sold the land to Thomas Rainwater and Market Equities would never be able to attack it.

The news left Jamie reeling and Beth took advantage of the surprise to stab him in the foot. Jamie screamed, fell to the ground and started hitting his sister. He finally seemed ready to put an end to Beth when Rip – belatedly realizing that Beth was heading off to confront Jamie after the funeral – broke into the kitchen and snatched him away from his wife.

Rip threw Jamie against the wall and was ready to kill the man himself – he had the wherewithal to put on his murder gloves before entering the house – when Beth shouts for him to stop. She then casually walks over and buries a knife in Jamie’s chest. She tells him to look at her as he runs out of life.

With her brother dead, Beth tells Rip not to think about how to hide the body and clean up the apartment. After some time she calls the police who come in to look at the destruction of the house and she tells the chief detective in her father’s case to investigate the offshore accounts connected to Jamie and Sarah and she will find out , who killed John.

While they’re doing that, Rip and Lloyd take a trip to the train station. The two throw Jamie in and then drive away in the car to dispose of the body, as Beth also gave the police the impression that Jamie attacked her and then fled.

It turns out that Jamie’s end was no more special than that of anyone else stupid enough to mess with the Yellowstone Ranch.
