SNL Music guest Hozier closed out the season with his hit “Too Sweet” and a cover of The Pogues’ “Fairytale of New York” on Saturday night’s (December 21) episode hosted by Martin Short.

Introduced by Short, Hozier performed “Too Sweet,” his 2024 chart-topper, which came 10 years after his breakthrough single “Take Me to Church,” which he performed throughout his career SNL Debuted in 2014.

“Too Sweet” reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, Pop Airplay and Rock & Alternative Airplay charts earlier this year. It peaked at number 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 year-end chart.

Later in the show, the Irish singer-songwriter, his backing singers and his band performed a spirited rendition of “Fairytale of New York” – the 1987 song recorded by The Pogues, which featured the band’s Shane MacGowan on vocals with Kirsty MacColl for the duet This became a classic of the Christmas season. (MacGowan sadly died of pneumonia last year and MacColl died in a tragic boating accident in 2000.)

During Saturday night’s performance, a slight lyrical change was made in a tongue-in-cheek manner, with the ballad’s original arc replaced by the lyric “You’re cheap and you’re gaunt.”

The appearance was well placed on the Christmas episode of SNL. Earlier this week, Hozier filmed some celebratory promos with Short and Keenan Thompson during rehearsals. Short comically complained about the decorations and script and, in another episode, discussed holiday celebrations with Hozier.

“Martin, don’t you just love Christmas?” Thompson asked in the clip. “I actually prefer celebrating the ancient Roman holiday of Saturnalia, so for me Christmas is just ‘Wednesday,'” Short replied. “A fellow Saturnite?” Hozier joked.
