After winning awards for his hit “Take Me To Church,” Hozier released his second studio album in 2019 Wasteland, baby!. Although the singer was praised by fans, she took a break from the studio and didn’t release another album for four years. And in 2023, Hozier entertained fans with his latest album Unreal Unearth. In addition to finding a career on and off stage, the singer also performed Saturday Night Live as a musical guest. To showcase his talent, Hozier performed his hit “Too Sweet” and even a cover of The Pogues’ “Fairytale of New York.”

As the first round of the College Football Playoff began last night, SNL was looking forward to welcoming the legendary Martin Short to the stage. When Short took over as host of the evening, he got a lot of laughs. As a master of the stage, the presenter continued to demonstrate his mastery of comedy. But when it came time to entertain the crowd with a song, the host introduced Hozier.

Hozier began the evening with “Too Sweet” and received high praise from fans. Comments included: “I’m a die-hard SNL fan, but Hozier is the first musical guest I was really excited about and actually watched both performances in full.” I’ve had this song all summer played repeatedly. Another person admitted: “One of the few performances on SNL where it sounds as good as the recorded version. Great voice, one of my favorite songs of the year!”

Hozier honors the Pogues with special achievement

Meanwhile have to perform twice SNLHozier decided to use his second appearance as a tribute to the band Pogues. While reviewing the group’s discography, the singer decided to perform “Fairytale of New York.” Premiered by Kristy MacColl and Pogues singer Shane McGowan, the band received major backlash because the song contained “homophobic slurs.”

In conversation with NME Speaking about the history of the song and the backlash it received, member James Fearnley recalled a fan’s story. “When the BBC announced they were censoring this text, I looked on Twitter where a guy said he loved the Pogues, but every Christmas he hears drunk guys shouting this word in the street – when they say ‘Fairytale of” singing along to “New York” – he remembers how many times he heard it when he was getting the shit kicked out of him at school for being gay.”

Hozier continues to expand his career. His song “Too Sweet” became the first song by an Irish artist since Sinéad O’Connor to top the Billboard charts. And the song was such a hit that it even landed on former President Barack Obama’s list of favorite songs.
