WWE responded by distancing itself from its longtime star and removing him from the Hall of Fame in 2015.

Initially, Hogan claimed that he had resigned from WWE, but the company quickly shut that down and confirmed that he had been fired.

In an interview with PEOPLE in 2015, Hogan apologized for the extremely offensive comments.

“Eight years ago I used offensive language in a conversation. It was unacceptable for me to have used this offensive language; there is no excuse for it; and I apologize for doing it,” Hogan said at the time.

“That’s not me. I firmly believe that every person in the world is important and should not be treated differently based on their race, gender, orientation, religious beliefs or any other reason,” he continued.

“I am disappointed in myself for using language that is offensive and inconsistent with my own beliefs.”

Three years later, in 2018, WWE reinstated Hogan.
