Hunter Dickinson was ejected after kicking the Duke player during the rebound fight

Kansas center Hunter Dickinson made his best impression on Draymond Green in Tuesday’s 75-72 win over Duke.

The Kansas center kicked Duke forward Maliq Brown as the two were on the floor fighting for a rebound in a game the Jayhawks led 57-55 at the time.

Dickinson went over Brown’s back as he tried to grab a rebound after his short miss. As Brown punched out aggressively, both players fell to the ground together.

Dickinson stumbled and threw a back heel into Brown’s face, making the contest a heated match as players had to be separated.

After the review, the Jayhawks’ 24-year-old leading scorer and rebounder received a Flagrant 2 and was ejected from the game.

“I wasn’t thinking about that at the moment, and even now I don’t feel like a Level 2 is justified,” Kansas coach Bill Self said after the game. “In my opinion, it’s probably a coin toss whether it’s Level 1 or Level 2.”

Dickinson is now in his fifth year of college and his second at Kansas after starting his career at Michigan. For most of his career, accusations of being a dirty player dogged him.

“I saw on the screen that he kicked him in the face, so I think that warrants an obvious two,” Duke coach Jon Scheyer said. “I didn’t look good or anything, but that was really easy for me.”

Dickinson entered Tuesday averaging 17 points and 10 rebounds per game.

The 7-foot-2, 265-pound center is a crucial member of the top-seeded Jayhawks, who failed to reach the Sweet 16 in back-to-back seasons after winning the 2022 national title.

Dickinson was productive throughout his college career, averaging at least 14 points per game in each of his five years.

He had 11 points and six rebounds before exiting Tuesday’s contest.

Flory Bidunga replaced Dickinson and finished the game with six points and eight rebounds.

“Obviously it’s a shame that an All-American like Hunter had to go,” Kansas forward KJ Adams said, according to the AP. “But it makes me happy that Flo got the chance to show the world what he can do. It’s amazing what he’s done out there, especially as a rookie coming in in this big environment, a huge game. He did really well.”

After his exit, the lead swung back and forth, and Kansas finally held on when Duke freshman Kon Knueppel fired a banked 3-pointer at the buzzer.

Kansas’ next meeting with Furman is Saturday in the early-season Las Vegas tournament.
