The following article contains spoilers for Sonic the Hedgehog 3So be careful if you haven’t seen the funny family film yet!

If you have kept up with the Cinema program 2024You probably know about the hit release Sonic the Hedgehog 3 The film received a solid review from CinemaBlend and easily breezed past the competition at the holiday box office this weekend. As the story of the famous nimble hedgehog and his team continues, there’s one particular dance sequence that made me laugh, and director Jeff Fowler told me how they brought it to life – especially with the help of Jim Carrey.

In Sonic the Hedgehog 3Dr. Robotnick (played by Jim Carrey) meets his long-lost grandfather, Professor Gerald Robotnick (also Carrey), and when the two don special suits to sneak through a room filled with lasers, of course a totally hilarious dance sequence breaks out . I was so fascinated by the scene that when I spoke to director Jeff Fowler, I asked him how it came about.

Apparently it was actually Jim Carrey’s idea, as he told CinemaBlend:

This is also one of my favorite scenes. The credit for this idea goes to Jim. In the first film he filmed this one little scene in his mobile lab where he puts on music, dances a little and then gets interrupted by Stone. In one of our first conversations about the third film, he said, “I want to dance again.” And I said, “Great, let’s do it.” So if we did it again, we would go big and literally dance more and let Ivo and Gerald perform as a duo. But it was so much fun to design and plan. We had a great choreography team. We had great dancers. Everyone gave their best and just delivered a great sequence.

Honestly, I’m not surprised that it was Jim Carrey’s idea to bring the dance sequence to life as a throwback to an earlier installment in the series. His moment in the first film was super funny, but he added a dance team to the choreography, intense set design and a lot two Carrey’s simultaneous appearance made the film even more over-the-top – so much so that I would have willingly paid to watch the film again just to see that moment. I mean, Carrey is known to be practical in his rolesSo it makes perfect sense that he’s upping the ante for the third film.

Carrey’s ideas for Robotnick and his grandfather paid off. Before the film’s release, some critics said Jim Carrey stole the show from Shadow (Keanu Reeves) and that he was truly one of the biggest draws of this film because of his “epic performance.” Plus, Jeff Fowler has said cool things before about working with Carrey on set and how he always wants to work hard and deliver in his roles, and this time he delivered twice as much humor.

The ending of the film doesn’t give us much hope for Robotnik (or his grandfather) returning, but Carrey previously said he was retired and then returned Sonic the Hedgehog 3, So never say never. Maybe we’ll be lucky Sonic the Hedgehog 4 to see Carrey pull off another fun dance sequence.
