Mel Gibson says his Malibu home was destroyed in the wildfires that ravaged the Los Angeles area this week.

Speaking to NewsNation, Gibson explained that he was in Austin recording an episode of Joe Rogan’s podcast when he learned his home was under threat. “As we talked, I felt kind of uneasy knowing my neighborhood was on fire. I thought, ‘Uh, I wonder if my spot is still there.’ When I got home, it actually wasn’t there.”

“I have never seen a place so perfectly burned that you could put it in an urn,” Gibson continued. “(The area) was completely congested. I’ve never seen such complete combustion.”

Despite the tragedy, Gibson tried to inject some humor into the situation, joking that he has now been “relieved of the burden of my belongings because everything is in ashes.”

In addition to Gibson, other actors who lost their homes in the Los Angeles wildfires include John Goodman, Anthony Hopkins, Billy Crystal, Eugene Levy, Ed Harris, Milo Ventimiglia, Miles Teller and Anna Faris.

During his appearance on The Joe Rogan ExperienceGibson criticized California Gov. Gavin Newsom for not taking enough action to prevent the wildfires. “In 2019, I think Newsom said, ‘I’m going to take care of the forest and preserve it,’ and do all these things,” Gibson said. “He didn’t do anything.”

“I think all of our tax dollars probably went to Gavin’s hair gel,” the actor added. “…It’s sad. The place is just burning.”
