CHARLOTTE – Roads in the Carolinas were icy Friday evening, creating slippery conditions.

Channel 9’s Joe Bruno spotted a huge fallen tree on 9th Street in Uptown across from the SkyHouse Luxury Apartments early Saturday morning.

Luckily, there was a Charlotte Firehouse near North Church Street. There were already barriers around the tree, and it didn’t appear it would significantly impact traffic in Uptown.

Channel 9’s Dave Faherty was in Catawba County early Saturday where he said Highway 127 was still very slick from overnight snow, sleet and freezing rain.

The last time Charlotte saw measurable snow of at least a tenth of an inch was in 2022. Snow was the biggest concern for Duke Energy this week, along with ice and the power grid.

Before any major weather event, authorities wanted to make sure residents were as prepared as possible.

“Duke Energy always encourages our customers to have a plan. You know, just make a plan in case you lose power because Mother Nature knows, we never know what that’s going to bring us,” Duke Energy spokesman Logan Stewart said. “Just having some supplies on hand, water bottles or something like that.”

We are also monitoring impacts at Charlotte Douglas International Airport. Channel 9’s Hunter Sáenz was at the airport Saturday morning, where things seemed much quieter than they had been 24 hours ago.

According to FlightAware, there were more than 160 delays and more than 700 cancellations on Friday. Channel 9’s Glenn Counts spoke with stranded passengers who had to spend the night at the airport or in a hotel.

“It has nothing to do with a bed, but it feels quite pleasant; To be honest, we’re having a good time right now,” said passenger Jack Harris.

“You have to take the positive out of the negative in life, so it was a tough day. “I’m just glad I’m still alive and able to go about my day,” said passenger Timi Adams.

It’s expected to be very busy at the airport on Saturday. Travelers are therefore asked to check with their airline before arrival. You can check the status of your flight on FlightAware or visit your airline’s website.
