We will have a light rainfall producer for part of the weekend. There will be a few hours where we could be concerned about a touch of freezing rain.

First, it will not be an ice storm with heavy ice accumulations. In a worst-case scenario, there will be just enough freezing rain to leave a light surface on some roads.

Let’s get to the weekend forecast for all of Michigan.

Saturday will remain dry. There will be light precipitation Saturday night and Sunday, mostly across the southern half of Lower Michigan. Late Sunday morning it will be warm enough for showers rather than freezing rain.

Here is the radar forecast from 8 a.m. Saturday to 7 a.m. Sunday. The purple shaded precipitation is freezing rain mixed with snow.

Hopefully the biggest cause for concern is when we don’t have to drive – in the middle of the night on Saturday evening. The first few hours of Sunday morning could still be a cause for concern over the north central and northeast Lower. Here is the radar forecast for 7 a.m. Sunday.

The accumulation of freezing rain tells the true story – just a light, patchy glaze. The forecast below shows some areas with 0.01 to 0.05 inches of ice accumulation. With 0.05 inches of ice accumulation, you are at risk of slipping and falling if you are in a hurry.

Temperatures will slowly warm up this weekend, but will still be in the winter range.

Saturday will be a cool day with temperatures just above freezing in the southern half of Michigan. If the temperature rises to 35 degrees on Saturday evening, you don’t have to worry about freezing rain on Saturday evening.

The warm-up continues Sunday, with the southern half of Michigan eventually warming to 40 degrees in the afternoon. Even the northern Lower and Upper Peninsula will warm well above freezing.

Roads will improve dramatically Sunday in the northern part of Michigan, where over 17 inches of snow has fallen.
