“If we win, Mike will take the record”

Evans needed 85 yards on Sunday for his 11th straight 1,000-yard season.

The Buccaneers need a win over the New Orleans Saints to secure their fourth straight NFC South title.

Tampa Bay is 4-0 this season when Evans has 85 or more yards.

So both actually go hand in hand.

“Mike plays a big role in this offense and in this passing game. Getting him involved early and often is one of the reasons for our success,” Mayfield said. “These things go hand in hand. There’s balance and the most important thing is winning, but I see how it’s all going – if we win, Mike gets the record. We have to focus on winning and getting him the ball, but (our…) guys play for each other.”

Evans long ago set the record for most consecutive 1,000-yard seasons early in his career. Hall of Famer Randy Moss is a distant second with six spots.

Now Evans is entering the rarest of territory where he could tie Rice, widely considered the greatest wide receiver of all time, for the most consecutive 1K campaigns.

He would also come within three seasons of tying Rice’s total of 14 1,000-yard receiving yards in his career.

Maintaining the streak received greater attention when Evans missed three games that season with a hamstring injury. Now he’s at 915 yards and has 85 more yards to go for more history, and Mayfield will be his biggest supporter.

“Mike won’t say anything about it, and that’s just who he is,” Mayfield said. “That’s why we love him, that’s why everyone loves him, that’s why he’s been so consistent for so long. It was never just about himself; it was about winning and finding ways to win.”
