You know her as an actor-comedian and one half of one of TV’s most popular BFF duos – Abbi and Ilana wide city, duh – and now you can meet Ilana Glazer as a mom. Yes, for her new stand-up special, Ilana Glazer: Human Magicthe titular star and first-time mother (Glazer and husband, computational biologist David Rooklin, welcomed their daughter in 2021), gives her signature unfiltered and hilarious reflections on labor, delivery, and the general mess of modern motherhood.

“Everyone tells you how hard it is to have a child, but I was shocked at the joy of it,” Glazer said The Hollywood Reporter. “People don’t seem to have room to wonder about magic because then we would have to stop living in this capitalist structure. And also – pregnancy is fun.”

Director: Jeff Tomsic, Ilana Glazer: Human Magic is the comedian’s second stand-up special episode Ilana Glazer: The planet is burningwhich debuted on Amazon Prime Video in 2020 and featured the star talking about “homophobes and Nazis, how shitty women’s razors are, and what a joke the patriarchy is.” The new hour-long show was recorded in May of this year at Toronto’s Elgin and Winter Garden Theater Center during Glazer’s 48-city tour of the United States and Canada.

Glazer told the Television Academy that they took a more coherent and clear approach to putting together the material for the new special than for the previous one. “I had much more of a framework and understood that I needed to create a plan,” they said. “The first time I did it, I found the material and put it together. Here I was really approaching an hour. There were a lot of parts that didn’t make it into the hour, and it wasn’t like I was always crafting the big picture, but to know my goal, to tour that hour and film that hour – I have that framework claimed this time.”
