Recently retired Ravichandran Ashwin caused a stir on the internet when he posted a cryptic reply to Virat Kohli’s social media tribute to him.

“I played with you for 14 years and when you told me today that you were retiring it touched me a bit and I have memories of all the years we played together. I enjoyed every part of the journey with you Ash, your skills and match-winning contributions to Indian cricket are second to none and you will always and forever be remembered as a legend of Indian cricket. I wish you nothing but the best in your life with your family and whatever else comes your way. With great respect and love for you and your loved ones. Thanks for everything buddy,” Kohli had posted on Wednesday after Ashwin announced his retirement.

Replying to the post, Ashwin said, “Thanks buddy! Like I told you, I’m going out there with you to bat at the MCG.”

A hint of impending retirement had come earlier in the day when Ashwin and Kohli appeared to have an emotional conversation. At the end, Kohli reached out and hugged Ashwin. He later explained in an X post why he had become emotional.

After the Test was cancelled, Ashwin went to the press conference with Rohit Sharma and announced his retirement.

Ashwin will continue to play a role in franchise cricket. He was picked by his debut Indian Premier League team, Chennai Super Kings, for a price of Rs 9.75 crore in the IPL 2025 Mega Auction last month.
