Illinois State Police activate emergency snow plan – NBC Chicago

Illinois State Police have activated a snow emergency plan as a winter storm hits central and southern parts of the state.

Troop Six, which covers 12 counties in parts of central and southern Illinois, launched the plan as heavy snowfall and an ongoing winter storm warning continue in the region.

Under the terms of the plan, which covers several highways and numerous state and county roads, a “towing ban” has gone into effect. According to officials, this order means disabled vehicles that do not pose a hazard to the roadway will be left on the side of the road or in ditches until the snow subsides.

Additionally, State Police will only handle accidents that result in significant vehicle or personal injury while the storm continues. Minor crashes will be fixed at a later date.

Finally, stranded motorists will continue to be supported and transported to safe locations.

Six to a foot of snow could fall across parts of central Illinois, leading to multi-vehicle crashes on Interstate 70 and reports of nearly impassable roads in the area. Blowing snow is also affecting visibility in the area, prompting authorities to urge residents to stay away from highways if possible.

Parts of southern Illinois could also see sleet and ice, adding another challenging element to the storm.

According to authorities, this storm is expected to last into Monday. Residents are urged to stay home if possible during the duration of the storm.
