‘I’m out, damn it’: Magnus Carlsen disqualified from 2024 World Rapid and Blitz Championships for wearing jeans | Chess News

Magnus Carlsen was fined $200 for wearing jeans before chief referee Alex Holowzsak disqualified him for a repeated violation.

“I’m pretty sick of FIDE, so I don’t want any more of it. I don’t want anything to do with them. I’m sorry to everyone at home, maybe it’s a stupid principle, but I don’t think it’s fun,” Carlsen told Norwegian broadcaster NRK.

What happened?

Susan Polgar explained what happened to Carlsen.

“Magnus Carlsen has withdrawn from the World Rapid Championship and will NOT take part in the World Blitz Championship,” she wrote on X.

“This is what I’ve gotten so far. He was wearing jeans (which is not allowed by FIDE according to the tournament rules published before the event). He was fined and agreed to change for tomorrow, but refused to change for tonight.

“FIDE did not agree with his position. Therefore, Magnus withdrew from the World Rapid Championship and decided not to take part in the World Blitz Championship either.

“The feud with FIDE is now official.”

Carlsen’s opinion

Carlsen, who suffered a loss to Denis Lazavik on the opening day and drew with Awonder Liang, Gleb Dudin and Aleksandr Shimanov and also struggled on the second day, explained why he didn’t want to come back and play.

“Yesterday was a difficult day. You know, I lost a game, could have lost a few more. “In general I didn’t play well, a bit out of control,” he said on the Take Take Take YouTube channel.

“I slept really well and had a nice lunch before coming here. I barely had time to go into the room and change, so I put on a shirt and jacket. And to be honest, I didn’t even think about the jeans.

“I even changed my shoes, but I didn’t even think about it. And so I came here, and I don’t know if it was after the first game or the second game. I think it was after… Yeah, I don’t remember.

“But I got a warning that I had to change my… Well, first of all, I got fined. And then I got a warning that if I didn’t change my jeans immediately, I wouldn’t be paired. They said I could do it today after the third round.

“I said I’ll change tomorrow if that’s okay. I didn’t even notice it today. But they said, well, you have to change now.

“And well, from that point on it became something of a matter of principle for me.”

When asked if he had lodged an appeal, the former world champion said: “No, I have not lodged an appeal. (2:04) Honestly, I’m too old to care too much at this point.”

“If that’s what they want to do, I guess it goes both ways, right? Nobody wants to give in, and here we are. For me it’s fine. (2:28) I’ll probably go somewhere where the weather is a little nicer than here.”

I don’t play flash

Magnus Carlsen has also confirmed that he will not be taking part in the Blitz Championship.

“I mean, no,” he said.

Has it happened in the past?

The Norwegian criticized FIDE for enforcing the rules.

“I don’t know if it’s happened in the past or not,” he said.

“But you know, there was this whole thing where FIDE actively wanted them to actually take action against players as well to get them not to sign with Freestyle and basically threatened them that they wouldn’t be in the “would be able to participate in the World Championship cycle” if they played in freestyle.

“To be honest, my patience with them wasn’t very great at first. And it’s okay.

“They can enforce their rules. That’s fine with me. And my answer is so good, then I’m out. Fuck you. I don’t think anything more needs to be said. OK.

“I’m sorry for you and everyone at home. I hope you have a nice rest of your vacation and we’ll see you sometime,” he concluded.
