IMPD: Machete attack suspect dies after being shot by officer

The call came in just before 3:45 p.m. on Wednesday, December 4, 2024, near the intersection of Brookville Road and I-465.

INDIANAPOLIS – A person shot by an IMPD officer in southeast Indianapolis Wednesday afternoon has died.

The shooting occurred in the 1400 block of Brookville Way, near the interchange of Brookville Road and Interstate 465. There is an office park in that area.

Officers initially responded to a report of an accident. When they arrived at the scene, they encountered a man with what police described as a machete.

An officer ordered the man to drop the weapon, but police said he did not follow orders and quickly walked toward the officer. The officer then shot and injured the suspect.

Officers gave the man medical treatment before he was taken to hospital in critical condition. The suspect later died from his injuries.

Investigators learned that the suspect had reportedly rammed into another vehicle containing a man and a woman. One of them got out of the car and the man allegedly hit them on the head and body with the machete. The man who was in the car went to a nearby store for help.

Police said the woman suffered injuries that appeared to have been caused by machete blows to her head and body, while the man appeared to have been injured in the accident. Both victims were taken to the hospital, where an IMPD spokesman described their condition as “stable.”

Investigators say the victim and suspect knew each other and believe the suspect waited for the man and woman to leave work before attacking them. Police said the suspect is a former employee of one of the companies in the office park where the attack and shooting occurred.

A witness reportedly told investigators that the suspect told him that he would witness a “suicide by cop” in the period following the attack but before officers arrived.

No officers or other members of the community were injured, police said in a news release Wednesday evening.

The officer who fired his weapon has been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation by IMPD Internal Affairs and a mostly civilian Use of Force Review Board.

Rick Snyder, Indy FOP president, sent this statement Wednesday evening:

Tonight we once again thank the dedication and selfless service of our Indianapolis police officers.

Tragically, an IMPD officer was forced to defend his life and the lives of others while confronting a violent active assailant.

Police officers repeatedly put themselves in danger to defend and protect residents and visitors to our capital.

As we pray for the family of the deceased, we also pray for the victims of this attack and for this officer who was forced to take action in defense of his life.

We must also remember the long-term impact on the officer’s family.

This is another tragic reminder that police officers face many types of weapons, including edged weapons, which are as deadly as any other instrument used to cause harm.

Tonight the violence was stopped, lives were protected and this officer is going home to his family without any physical injuries.

We are grateful for that.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call IMPD Det. Dustin Keedy at 317-327-3475 or call Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana to submit an anonymous tip at 317-262-TIPS.
