Will Oscar winner Cillian Murphy reprise his role in ’28 Days Later’?

It’s been a long wait, but the highly anticipated follow-up to the horror films 28 Days Later (2002) and 28 Weeks Later (2007) is coming next summer, and fans are getting their first taste of what to expect in the trailer 28 years later.

Many quickly recognized what looked like a zombie incarnation of Cillian Murphy’s bike messenger Jim from “28 Days Later,” surviving an apocalypse against all odds.

Apparently, in the latest trailer, he appears behind Jodie Comer’s character in a field, looking a lot worse for wear – which is hardly surprising if that’s actually him.

There had been speculation and hope among some fans that the Oppenheimer Oscar winner would return to the franchise.

But Murphy’s name is missing from promotional posters for the latest film, even though he is credited as an executive producer on Sony Pictures’ website.

The latest film stars “Killing Eve” star Comer, “The Fall Guy” star Aaron Taylor-Johnson and “Conclave” star Ralph Fiennes – all three can be seen fighting zombies in the trailer.

“28 Years Later” takes place almost three decades after the first film, when a “rage virus” that catastrophically infected people escaped from a biological weapons laboratory.

In the third film we meet a group of survivors who live in quarantine on a small island and have managed to avoid infection.

But when one of them leaves the island on a mission to the mainland, he discovers secret horrors that have mutated not only the infected, but also the survivors.

The film’s tagline is: “Time has healed nothing.”

The trailer begins with a look back at the popular children’s television show Teletubbies, which first aired in 1997. Several children gathered around an old television while the lively theme song played harmlessly – yet menacingly – in the background.

The action soon begins with several battle scenes, while an ominous, rhyming recording of Rudyard Kipling’s war poem “Boots” can be heard in the background.

The windows of a church are smashed before the camera pans out to a rural island where wooden crosses with rosaries hanging from them can be seen all over the world.

Some graffiti can be seen on what looks like a farmhouse: “Behold, he comes with the clouds” – a verse from the first chapter of the Bible’s Revelation, with “Jimmy” scrawled next to it in white paint.

Could this be a reference to Murphy’s character Jim?

Is this a zombieized version of Cillian Murphy?

Taylor-Johnson then trudges through green fields with a bow and arrow, and there are some bloody clips that are (thankfully) hard to see.

A pile of skulls is shown in the middle of a clearing before the zombie figure, who may or may not be Murphy, briefly appears.

Comer is also seen cradling a baby.

Several people joked about Murphy’s possible appearance on social media. with a joke: “Method acting that would put even Christian Bale to shame,” while others lamented the fact that they found the fleeting shot to be a spoilsport.

The original film was written by Alex Garland and directed by Danny Boyle, who famously said that it was not a zombie film, although he is credited with helping to revive the genre.

“28 Weeks Later,” directed and co-written by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, starred Jeremy Renner, Rose Byrne and Robert Carlisle.

Garland and Boyle returned for the third film, both also producing it.

28 Years Later will be released on June 20th.
