Inactive Georgia player receives penalty for bizarre play in Sugar Bowl game against Notre Dame

A Georgia Bulldogs football player who was inactive in the Sugar Bowl against Notre Dame on Thursday night drew a bizarre penalty.

Parker Jones stood on the sideline during the game and cost his team crucial distance in the second quarter.

Georgia quarterback Gunner Stockton connected with Arian Smith for a 66-yard pass. As Smith ran up the field, the outside linebacker ran with him. However, the referee encountered Jones on the sideline. Georgia was penalized for sideline interference, costing the Bulldogs 10 yards.

Two runs and an incomplete pass later, the Bulldogs had to settle for a field goal. Bulldogs kicker Peyton Woodring converted a 41-yard field goal.

The punishment sparked reactions on social media.

Notre Dame scored two goals in the final seconds of the first half to take a 13-3 halftime lead.

Jones, a cornerback, is a redshirt sophomore from Albany, Georgia. He has never played a snap for the Bulldogs in his career.

The quarterfinals of the College Football Playoff were played one day after a terrorist attack on Bourbon Street in New Orleans. More than a dozen people were killed when a suspect identified as Shamsud-Din Jabbar drove through a crowd. Several others were injured in the attack.

The Sugar Bowl was postponed from Wednesday to Thursday evening.
