Meanwhile, the much-anticipated clash between India and Australia at the Gabba in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy got off to a slow start as only 80 deliveries were bowled on the morning of the Brisbane Test before the game was abandoned due to regular rain showers. It’s not quite the start either team would have wanted, a game they know could decide the outcome of the series and the World Test Championships as a whole. However, there will be optimism in both camps knowing that the cricket in this series has progressed rapidly and could make for some exciting cricket even in a limited period of time.

The first day drama began with the actual toss when visiting captain Rohit Sharma made the right call and caused something of a surprise by choosing to bowl first on a track known for being a batter’s paradise to begin with, before the conditions became more and more difficult the game continues. Even more surprising was that Pat Cummins claimed that he too would have opted to bowl if the toss had gone in his favour, perhaps indicating that both captains and strategy teams were trying to make the most of the overcast conditions and some humidity to do on the field.

However, India failed to take advantage of these conditions in their opening attack as the ball didn’t perform quite as well as they had hoped on the opening morning, with the opening duo of Usman Khawaja and Nathan McSweeney looking relatively comfortable against the fresh red ball. India also weren’t as threatening as they could have been as they were once again a bit short and didn’t play the opening rounds as often as they would have liked. A good sign for India was that Jasprit Bumrah’s pace should be back to normal, meaning he had recovered well from his ailments in the last game, but he was not as strong and dangerous as he was in Perth.

India go into the Gabba Test match with two personnel changes, bringing in Akash Deep for Harshit Rana to take advantage of his batting quality, which could be of better use on the Brisbane pitch. They also opted to sign Ravindra Jadeja as a replacement for his long-time spin partner Ravichandran Ashwin, meaning India have used three different spin bowling all-rounders in the first three games of the series. Jadeja could offer a little more with the bat than Ashwin and will also add a different angle of attack with his left-arm spin after Ashwin’s struggles with the ball in hand.

Meanwhile, Australia go into the game largely unchanged. The only change is to bring Josh Hazlewood back into the team as replacement for Scott Boland. While Khawaja and McSweeney started cautiously and took their time against the new ball, they lasted 13.2 overs without causing any damage to the wicket column. This puts them and the middle order in a strong position for the second day of play where they can hope for sustained batting conditions against a softer ball.

India will be very concerned about allowing the likes of Marnus Labuschagne and Steven Smith to take advantage of this situation to add more runs and push this innings significantly in Australia’s favor even before Travis Head or Mitchell Marsh could do further damage with quick runs. While there is no need for India to panic this early in the Australian innings, the fact remains that they will be worried about whether Australia could take advantage of the Gabbas’ typically strong early conditions to pile up the runs and beat India by one stroke to bat from the playing field on which the visitors must bat last.

Here are some notes on the third Test Day 2 between India and Australia:

– Nitish Kumara Reddy ended Marnus Labuschagne’s misery, dismissing him for 12.

– Jasprit Bumrah got the better of Usman Khawaja early on the second day as the Australian opener returned to the pavilion after 21 points.
