Indiana football hires Chandler Whitmer as its new QB coach

BLOOMINGTON – IU Football plans to hire Chandler Whitmer, currently a passing game specialist with the Atlanta Falcons, as its next quarterbacks coach, according to a source.

Whitmer replaces the outgoing Tino Sunseri, who has taken over the full offensive coordinator position at UCLA. Sunseri will remain with Indiana for the duration of the College Football Playoff. Whitmer retains both of Sunseri’s titles, quarterbacks coach and co-offensive coordinator.

Whitmer was a quarterback by trade and played at Illinois and UConn before taking up coaching. He spent 2019 as a graduate assistant at The Ohio State University, where he worked with Justin Fields, and 2020 in the same role at Clemson, where he worked with Trevor Lawrence.

Whitmer then worked in quality control for the Los Angeles Chargers for three seasons, working with quarterback Justin Herbert. Atlanta hired Whitmer for his current position in February.

Curt Cignetti’s decision to bring Whitmer aboard fits the same pattern that Cignetti followed when he hired Sunseri at James Madison – a young coach who was familiar with innovative offensive ideas and with both the quarterback position and co- OC and Play Caller Mike worked together with Shanahan.
