Winthrop’s Mark Prosser

Mark Prosser is in his fourth season as head coach of the Winthrop men’s basketball program. He was named head coach on April 2, 2021.

Prosser began his coaching career as a student assistant at his alma mater, Marist. After a few seasons, he got his first assistant job at Wofford in 2002. He then spent five seasons at Bucknell until 2008. He returned to Wofford and remained there until 2011.

In the spring of 2011, Prosser received his first head coaching job at Division 3 Brevard. He spent just one season at the helm, compiling a 5-23 record. In 2012, Prosser joined Winthrop’s staff as an assistant and remained there until 2018 before landing another head coaching job at Western Carolina. He finished his three seasons at WCU with an overall record of 37-53.

Prosser was then hired to head Winthrop and has had some success since then. In his first season, he led Winthrop to a 23-9 overall record and a 14-2 record in conference play, good enough to win the South Division in the Big South. In the following two seasons, Winthrop finished in the top five in the conference. So far, Prosser has an overall record of 65-45 with Winthrop.

TEAM NEWS

  • Reached 10 wins before conference play for the first time since 2015-16
  • It was only my second time playing at Indiana State, as the only other trip came on November 13, 2012 in a 66-55 loss at Indiana State
  • The Eagles are 3-2 overall against teams from Indiana
  • Posted 44th 100-point game ever (42-2 all-time) with 102-97 win over Mercer.
  • It was the 18th 100-point game against a D1 opponent, as the Eagles are 16-2 in those games
  • In their last road game, the Eagles shot a season-low 29 percent in a loss to FSU
  • Of the Eagles’ non-conference D1 opponents, six (as of December 26) have winning records and eight have a winning record of .500 or better this season
  • The Eagles have five 1,000-point scorers on the roster this year, third-most in the nation (D1), while Minnesota/Ole Miss is tied for the lead with seven

Kelton Talford

  • Posted a double-double in two of the last three games with 18 points and 10 rebounds against Mercer (18th double-double of his career).
  • Played 16 games against Power 4 opponents and averaged 11.9 ppg and 6.2 rpg
  • In 10 starts against Power 4 opponents, he averaged 14.8 ppg, 6.6 rpg (63 percent from the floor).
  • Tied program record for most games played (131), so today’s game will break the mark

Notable KenPom numbers from Winthrop:

(from 364 teams)

Pace – No. 4 (No. 8 Offense / No. 45 Defense)

Offensive Efficiency – #183

  • As the tempo number suggests, Winthrop plays very quickly, with an average possession time of 15 seconds.
  • They post an effective field goal percentage of 49.4 (No. 224).
  • From the outside, they struggled with a three-point percentage of 28.5 (No. 332).
  • With an attempt percentage of 55.1 (FTA/FGA), they have the highest free throw attempt percentage in the country. But on the strip they only make up 65.3%.

Defensive Efficiency – #187

  • Winthrop forces a good amount of turnovers with a rate of 21.7 percent (No. 33).
  • The teams are shooting 35.7 percent on three-pointers and 50 percent on two-pointers against them (No. 269; No. 148).
  • Their block and steal rates are in the top 120 nationally (10.6 percent block rate, 11.5 percent steal rate).
  • The teams achieve a decent offensive rebound rate against Winthrop (32.7 percent, No. 280).

OG’s choice

Win/loss record: 8-2

It’s Indiana’s last game before they head into conference play for the rest of the season, so it’s safe to say they’re looking to improve things before Big Ten play.

Winthrop has some good numbers defensively, but has struggled against teams with more competition (e.g. Florida State, Louisville). However, the Hoosiers were not a team to pull away early, only leading by single digits in the final five minutes against Chattanooga. While I expect the Hoosiers to win comfortably, I don’t think it will be a completely dominant performance.
