INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – The National Weather Service in Indianapolis issued a special statement Tuesday afternoon regarding snow next Wednesday in central Indiana.

Central Indiana is expected to develop snow showers and snow squalls Wednesday afternoon and evening. These showers may cause brief periods of heavy snow, whiteout conditions, wind gusts in excess of 40 mph, and flash frost on surfaces. Conditions can deteriorate quickly without warning and lead to heavy snow showers. Traveling can be dangerous at times, especially during the evening commute.

For southern Indiana, the weather service in Louisville, Kentucky, also issued a special statement Tuesday afternoon. “Late Tuesday evening, a strong upper level disturbance will move into the region from the northwest, producing a band of light snow that is expected to move eastward across southern Indiana and central Kentucky. This band is expected to develop near the I-65 corridor well after midnight and then move east toward the I-75 corridor by sunrise Wednesday. Nighttime temperatures are expected to fall into the high 20s and low 30s. Minor snow accumulations may occur east of I-65. Recent warmth and warm ground temperatures will likely limit snow accumulations on elevated decks and roofs. While road surface temperatures are expected to remain in the mid to upper 30s, bridges and overpasses could become slippery Wednesday morning. If you have travel plans for early Wednesday morning, stay up to date on the latest weather forecasts and conditions. Later Wednesday, isolated snow showers and snow squalls are expected to develop in the afternoon and continue into the evening hours. Little to no accumulation is expected throughout the afternoon. However, in the late afternoon and just before sunset, temperatures will drop to near freezing, which may cause slippery patches to form on roads where snow showers and snow squalls intersect. Drivers traveling Wednesday afternoon and evening should exercise caution.”

The Indiana Department of Transportation’s Eastern District, which serves Indianapolis, said in a social media post midday Tuesday that its plows were en route to prepare roads for Wednesday’s snow. “Our plows will be on patrol tomorrow morning to clean up whatever Mother Nature decides to give east-central Indiana. We want to emphasize that the biggest threat tomorrow will not be snow, but winds in excess of 35 miles per hour and temperatures near freezing. Snow squalls should not be taken lightly – please drive slower, drive with headlights on (especially in the morning) and give yourself extra time to get to your destination safely,” reads the post from INDOT’s Eastern District .

INDOT’s West Central District, which serves areas west of Indianapolis, said just after 8:15 a.m. Tuesday that its crews were preparing to begin pre-treating roads ahead of the snow squalls.
