Inside Tennessee Basketball's win in New York against Miami and the impact of Chaz Lanier

NEW YORK – Chaz Lanier went scoreless for more than 12 minutes in the second half at Madison Square Garden on Tuesday.

Then the incredible basketball guard from Tennessee came back into the picture at the perfect time. Lanier scored from midfield, at the rim and behind the 3-point line in the final 7:50, securing 11 needed points for the newly ranked No. 1 Vols amid a sudden push from Miami.

Tennessee beat the Hurricanes 75-62 and went 9-0 for the first time since 2000-01. Lanier led the Vols with 22 points. Zakai Zeigler added 13 points and nine assists against Miami (3-7).

Tennessee plays at Illinois on Saturday (5:30 p.m. ET, FOX) in its final power conference game before SEC play begins in January.

Zakai Zeigler controlled another game for the Vols

Zeigler played at an All-American level this season. It was a similar story for the New York native on Tuesday.

The senior point guard was back in control of the game, which has been the case for Tennessee lately during its rise to the No. 1 ranking. Zeigler had at least eight assists in three straight games and in four of his last five games entering Tuesday. He averaged 8.0 assists during that stretch.

This time, Tennessee had no shooting problems at MSG

Madison Square Garden hasn’t been kind to Tennessee’s 3-point shooting lately, but the Vols had no problems shooting the ball on Tuesday.

The Vols opened 4-for-6 on 3-pointers. They finished the first half 7 of 17 and made more three-pointers in the half than in the last two games in the arena. In the end, the Vols shot 10 of 25 on three-pointers.

UT posted a 6-23 record in a Sweet 16 loss to Florida Atlantic in March 2023 and a 6-39 record in an overtime loss to Texas Tech in December 2021. In those games, the team scored in three games an overall rate of 19.4%.
