Coco Gauff is no longer a teenage star; The South Florida native is now simply a tennis star. The 20-year-old is in Melbourne tonight for the 2025 Australian Open and wants to start her path to a second Grand Slam title.

Gauff had another strong year in 2024, but was unable to build on her 2023 US Open championship. She reached the semifinals of the Aussie Open and French Open and rose to No. 2 in the WTA rankings before bowing out in the second half of the summer and exiting in the round of 16 at Wimbledon and the US Open. The phenomenon enters Melbourne at number 3.

She has made a strong start to the new year, winning all five United Cup matches in straight sets in the lead-up to the Australian Open. That included a win over world No. 2 Iga Swiatek, who received a month-long ban last summer for failing a drug test. Swiatek has won 11 of 14 career games against Gauff, adding extra weight to the Delray Beach native’s win.

Gauff reached her first Aussie Open semifinal in 2024, losing to eventual winner Aryna Sabalenka. Coco Gauff’s first match at the 2025 Australian Open is scheduled to begin tonight, January 12, at 7:30 p.m. ET.

If Gauff wins, she will face either Leolia Jeanjean of France or Jodie Burrage of Great Britain on Tuesday evening or in the early hours of Wednesday. She could face Naomi Osaka in the round of 16 and No. 7 Jessica Pegula in the quarterfinals. Her path leads to a possible semifinal duel with number 1 Aryna Sabalenka, who defeated Gauff in the final of the 2023 US Open.

Who is Coco Gauff’s opponent at the Australian Open 2025?

Coco Gauff’s first-round opponent is Sofia Kenin, the world No. 22, who was born in Moscow, Russia, but grew up in Pembroke Pines, Florida. Kenin won the 2020 Australian Open and then reached the final of the French Open. Most recently she reached the round of 16 at the ASB Classic in Auckland, New Zealand, two weeks ago.

The two played each other three times, with Kenin leading 2-1. They last met at Wimbledon in 2023, when Kenin defeated Gauff in three sets in the first round. Kenin also defeated Gauff en route to her 2020 Aussie Open championship. Gauff’s only win came at the Auckland tournament in 2023.

Coco Gauff was born on March 13, 2004 in Atlanta. But she grew up in Delray Beach, about 20 miles south of West Palm Beach and 53 miles north of Miami. Due to her global tennis career, she did not attend local high school, but graduated from high school in 2022.

Gauff trained at Pompey Park, the same court where Venus and Serena Williams became world-class tennis stars after moving to Florida in the 1990s. When Gauff received the key to the city of Delray Beach in 2018 at the age of 14, she said she dreamed of being “the next Serena Williams.” And her breakthrough came in 2019 when she beat Venus in the first round at Wimbledon at just 15 years old.
