In honor of the United States hosting the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup, Inter Miami will be allowed to play the opening match of the competition on June 15, 2025. Before the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup draw began, the Herons were guaranteed last place in Group A, but they did not know until now which team they would face in their first game of the tournament.

Other members of Inter Miami’s Group A include SE Palmeiras, FC Porto and Al Ahly FC. As a team from Pot 1, SE Palmeiras will first face the team drawn into the A2 slot, namely FC Porto. That’s why Inter Miami will play Al Ahly in the opening game of the tournament.

All eyes will be on the Herons when they face Al Ahly at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami. The Egyptian team automatically qualified for the tournament as winners of the 2021, 2023 and 2024 CAF Champions League.

The Herons were one of the last teams to qualify for the newly expanded 2025 FIFA Club World Cup. After Inter Miami won the 2024 Supporters’ Shield for its record-breaking MLS season, FIFA President Gianni Infantino confirmed that the club had secured a place in this summer’s tournament as the host country’s representative.

Inter Miami joins the Seattle Sounders as the two MLS teams competing in the FIFA Club World Cup this summer. The Sounders earned their spot in the tournament as winners of the 2022 Concacaf Champions Cup.

The tournament will be one of the first challenges Javier Mascherano faces as the new Miami boss. The former Barcelona player took over the reins of the team after Gerardo “Tata” Martino left the club for personal reasons just days after Inter Miami’s shock exit in the first round of the 2024 MLS Cup playoffs.

However, with players like Lionel Messi, Luis Suárez, Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets in his team, Mascherano must like his side’s chances compared to Inter Miami’s Group A competition.
