Interceptions give the Seattle Seahawks a 24-10 lead against the Arizona Cardinals

GLENDALE, Ari. – The Seattle Seahawks scored three goals in less than four minutes and benefited from two interceptions. They recovered from an early loss of coverage to build a commanding 24-10 halftime lead over the Arizona Cardinals at State Farm Stadium.

Out of the gate, Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray began cooking with a clean pocket and minimal pressure, leading a six-play, 70-yard scoring drive that ended with receiver Michael Wilson hitting safety Coby Bryant on a corner route for hit a 41st-yard touchdown to give the home team the lead less than four minutes into the game.

But from that point on, the Seahawks held serve in all three phases and quickly recovered from a difficult first three minutes. Geno Smith completed eight of his first nine passes to set up a short field goal by Jason Myers, and just a few plays later, linebacker Ernest Jones caught Murray with a horribly telegraphed pass over the middle and returned it to the red zone for the decisive momentum – Shift in sales.

On the ensuing snap, Smith made Arizona pay for his mistake by following through on his advances before firing a perfectly placed 19-yard touchdown to Jaxon Smith-Njigba on a corner route from the slot, giving Seattle the lead. Moments later, Bryant made up for his early coverage mishap by jumping on a bad throw from Murray for his second interception of the season, setting the table for a one-yard touchdown run by Zach Charbonnet that cut the lead to 10 increased.

After struggling for weeks to establish a consistent running game, Charbonnet enjoyed the best half of his young NFL career as a replacement for injured starter Ken Walker III, rushing 10 times for 87 yards and two touchdowns. Towards the end of the first quarter, he pounced on a fly sweep from one yard out and doubled his point total when he shot through a massive crease on a counter-trey run after a Cardinals field goal, making it 51 after three minutes -yard touchdown scored in the half play.

While the offensive line moved the line of scrimmage to create holes for Charbonnet and Kenny McIntosh, Smith also delivered a solid half, completing 15 of 18 pass attempts for 151 yards and his 14th touchdown of the season. Smith-Njigba led all receivers with 70 yards on four receptions, while Charbonnet added 42 yards on four receptions from the backfield to power a surprisingly balanced attack.

As for Seattle’s defense, coach Mike Macdonald had to be pleased with his team’s response after giving up a rare, explosive six-man passing play early. Arizona converted just two of five third-down opportunities and rushed for just 47 yards in the first two quarters without having much success after the opening drive.

To cap off the strong performance, Tyrice Knight led the team with five tackles and had a pass breakup, while defensive tackle Johnathan Hankins recorded a sack and Derick Hall incurred two major holding penalties, including one on the play before Jones’ interception 2nd and 19th Leonard Williams and Devon Witherspoon each contributed a tackle in the loss for Seattle.
