Investigators identify suspect behind Cybertruck that exploded at Trump Hotel with tattoo

The driver of a Tesla Cybertruck that exploded outside the Trump International Hotel Las Vegas on Wednesday was identified by photos of charging stations, a passport, a driver’s license and a tattoo on his arm, according to law enforcement officials.

Police identified the person they were looking for as 37-year-old Matthew Livelsberger, an active duty U.S. Army Special Operations soldier from Colorado Springs, Colorado.

Las Vegas Sheriff Kevin McMahill said during a news conference Thursday that while there was substantial evidence that Livelsberger was indeed the person in the truck when it exploded, the body was burned beyond recognition and he had not yet found one Confirmation by DNA or DNA from the medical records shows that it is actually Livelsberger.

Still, investigations since the truck explosion outside the Trump Hotel around 8:40 a.m. that killed Livelsberger and injured seven others have uncovered several pieces of evidence.

Investigators discovered a military ID card, a passport, a .50 caliber Desert Eagle semi-automatic pistol and another semi-automatic weapon.

McMahill said many of the weapons discovered were burned beyond recognition.

Investigators also found an iPhone, a smartwatch and several credit cards with the perpetrator’s name on them.

While the person’s body was burned beyond recognition, McMahill also said the person suffered a gunshot wound to the head before the detonation and one of the handguns was found at his feet in the vehicle.

McMahill said the victim had a tattoo on his arm, parts of which were visible on the charred body.

“That gave us a lot of confidence that it was indeed the same person,” McMahill said, also noting that the credit cards, a military ID and a passport contributed to that determination.

Livelsberger’s movements after renting the Cybertruck through the Turo app were tracked using photos that showed he was the person driving the vehicle.

McMahill confirmed that investigators have only seen Livelsberger in the truck and are not aware of any other people involved in this case.

As for the movement, however, the sheriff said Livelsberger rented the truck on Saturday and drove through several loading stations, including Monument, Colorado; Trinidad, Colorado; Las Vegas, New Mexico; Gallup, New Mexico; Flagstaff, Arizona; and Kingman, Arizona.

McMahill showed video of the truck moving through Las Vegas, driving up and down the Strip, pulling into the Trump Hotel valet, leaving the hotel and then returning around 8:40 a.m. Seventeen seconds later, the truck exploded in the valet parking area of ​​the Trump Hotel hotel.

On Thursday, Trump Hotel management issued a statement on the matter.

“The safety of our guests and employees remains our top priority,” they said. “We are working with the relevant authorities to provide all necessary information.”

That same morning, a man driving a truck with an ISIS flag plowed into a crowd on Bourbon Street in New Orleans, killing over a dozen people and injuring dozens more.

The truck’s driver, Shamsud-Din Jabbar, also rented the vehicle through Turo.

McMahill said both Livelsberger and Jabbar served at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, although there is no record of them serving there at the same time.

He also said that both men served in Afghanistan in 2009, although there was no evidence that they were in the same province in Afghanistan, the same location or the same unit.

Livelsberger was a Green Beret operations sergeant who spent most of his time at Fort Carson, Colorado, and in Germany. McMahill said Livelsberger received permission to leave Germany, where he served with the special forces unit. He also previously served in the National Guard and Army Reserve.

He also received several awards and honors while serving in the U.S. Army.
