Irondale officer dies after being struck by a vehicle while directing traffic

An Irondale police officer is dead after he was struck by a vehicle Monday morning.

Irondale police said Lt. Mark Meadows, 60, was on duty at an intersection directing traffic shortly after 7:30 a.m. when he was struck by a passing vehicle.

He was taken to Grandview Hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

Following the incident, all lanes of Grants Mill Road near Overton Road were closed Monday morning.

Irondale Mayor James D. Stewart released the following statement after Meadows’ death:

Lt. Mark Meadows was a valued member of our Irondale family for over 30 years. He was a man of few words, but always led by example and embodied the heart of a true public servant. Lt. Meadows will be sorely missed by his brothers and sisters in the Irondale Police Department, as well as by all of our city employees and citizens. We are comforted to know that he is with his Heavenly Father, and we will continue to accompany his family in prayer as they mourn this great loss.

The police also issued a statement of support.

The Irondale Police Department would like to thank area law enforcement agencies for their assistance with this incident. The Irondale Police Department would also like to thank the family and friends of Lt. Sending our collective support, thoughts and prayers to Meadows. Grief support will be offered to members of the Irondale Police Department and others in need.

According to the Central Alabama Firearms Training website, Meadows is originally from Jacksonville, Florida.

He began his police career in 1992 and received FBI pistol and rifle instructor training in 2001.

He served for four years in the U.S. Army’s 3rd Ranger Battalion, Ft. Benning, Georgia, 10th Mountain Division, Fort Benning, Georgia.
