Is Anthony Davis playing? Lakers vs. Hawks final injury report released

Will Anthony Davis, the Los Angeles Lakers’ nine-time All-Star center, suit up for his 19-14 club’s second game in as many nights, a road game Friday against the 18-16 Atlanta Hawks?

The 6-foot-2 Kentucky superstar was forced to miss LA’s 114-106 win over the 11-22 Portland Trail Blazers on Thursday night as he continues to deal with a sprained left ankle.

With Davis absent, Los Angeles first-year head coach JJ Redick brought in Jaxson Hayes, a raw if athletic young big man, to replace him. Hayes managed just 17:51, scored four points on 2 of 4 shooting from the field, pulled down six boards and had a steal and a block.

Two-way center Christian Koloko, the only other healthy traditional five-man available Thursday night, actually played more minutes than Hayes. The 7-foot player played 18:30 minutes against Portland and scored eight points on 4 of 8 shooting from the floor, eight rebounds, three assists and one steal.

The Trail Blazers’ two participating centers, starter Deandre Ayton and rookie reserve Donovan Clingan, combined for just 10 points on 4 of 6 shooting from the field, nine rebounds and two assists. Ayton, who is averaging a double-double of 14.3 points and 10.0 rebounds on the year, played just 20:59 minutes, clearly bothered by the athleticism of Hayes and Koloko.

As usual, Los Angeles big men Christian Wood (recovering from left knee surgery) and Jarred Vanderbilt (recovering from right foot surgery) are both on the shelf. Neither player has made their season debut in LA’s first 33 games so far and both will miss the club’s 34th game.

For Atlanta are second-year combo guard Kobe Bufkin (right shoulder injury management), big man Larry Nance Jr. (broken fourth metacarpal bone in right hand), deep bench center Cody Zeller (not with the team) and Second-year center Mouhamed Gueye (assigned to the club’s G-League affiliate, the College Park Skyhawks) is unavailable. Two-way players Daeqwon Plowden and Keaton Wallace are also with the Skyhawks and will miss the matchup.

The Lakers have been on a roll lately, winning seven of their last 10 games. The addition of 3-and-D small forward Dorian Finney-Smith and guard Shake Milton has bolstered the club’s strength, even if LA lost some playmaking and points by signing the frustratingly inconsistent D’Angelo Russell for the second time in his season with the Brooklyn Nets gave up his NBA career.

Davis was rated as the likely candidate for Friday’s race. Now his official fate has been confirmed. The five-time All-NBA star will at least play, Jovan Buha of The Athletic reports.
