Is Christmas Eve a federal holiday? Here’s what you should know for 2024

Christmas Eve is not a designated federal holiday. Still, U.S. presidents including Joe Biden and Donald Trump have used the holiday to give the country’s more than 2 million federal workers a day off.

The White House announced Thursday that Biden has signed an executive order giving federal employees a day off on Dec. 24, 2024.

“All executive departments and agencies of the federal government will be closed and their employees relieved of duty on Tuesday, December 24, 2024, the day before Christmas,” the White House announcement said.

Although most federal employees will be absent, the White House said heads of executive departments and agencies will decide whether certain offices and facilities of their organizations must remain open on Tuesday.
